Reveal (AKA Reward) shops are usually shops that allow you to reveal yourself as a shopper and reward a prize for following a set protocol. Sometimes a company will be offering a new product and request that their employees present the product using specified criteria. Or a vendor might have a contest to encourage the sale of their particular product or it could be just to make certain that an employee is making an effort to upsell or use an opportunity to sell an add-on. We are asked to verify that the employee has met all the required criteria and if so we get to provide a prize to them.
They can be a whole lot of fun to do, but you should be aware that once you have completed one, you are now known and cannot expect to do a straight shop at that location for some time.
Some shops require you to reveal yourself even if they do not win and to remind them of the promotion in place. This can be awkward and requires great diplomacy.

I have probably done more of these than I even remember over the years......and yes they are FUN when they WIN......but not all win.....and I have been cussed out and heard of others being called a liar.....:~O For me that is 1 out of MANY......but it does happen.

I just did one the other day that did not win and the manager was VERY gracious, but did ask me to tell him exactly what the cashier did say so he could talk to her.....:~} So if necessary be prepared to give the manager an outline of what WAS said.....:~}

I can handle all the nasties though....what I was NOT prepared for.....an example that just happened a couple months ago.....just as I was leaving an eat in Fast Food shop an employee was coming to work and says, " Do you remember me?!?" I had rewarded her over a YEAR ago at a totally different fast food place.....if she would have been 5-10 minutes earlier I would have had to not only dump that shop but not been able to go back the next shift either, thankfully this is a place that gets shopped only 2-3 times a year.....another time I was in a grocery store (that I use to shop) and a manager from a nearby fast food place came in to get something for his business and spots me and says rather loudly, " We are waiting for you!!" ......I was soooo happy that he drew absolutely NO attention, but I quit shopping that store anyway in case he talked....:~}

Again I will say REWARD SHOPS ARE FUN.....just be prepared in case something out of the way happens....:~} Martha

I agree that a Reveal shop can be fun. However, you have to be prepared to give negative feedback in a very professional way if and when the employee doesn' t win the reward or perform all the required activities. I just did one this week where the employee only did 2 of 4. I was required to speak with the manager, explain to him what happened and get his signature. I' m a consultant in my professional life and so I was comfortable doing this, but I know that some new shoppers might not be quite as comfortable having to provide negative feedback in person.
However, you can do it! Just think about what you might say in advance if the employee does really well OR if they don' t do so well. You can be objective and matter-of fact and then finish off with some encouraging words like, " I know you' ll do much better next time. Good Luck!"
Have fun with those Reveals!

Thanks

I had my first intricate reveal bar/dinner visit tonight. (I was so excited to get the assignment! I had wanted this one for so long & applied several times.)
Thank goodness everything went well, ID checks and service happened as they should have happened. When I asked for the manager my heart was running wild on adrenaline! I had my sister-in-law (another shopper) with me and after we left I told her how nervous I was; what a rush though! Thank goodness I didn't have to give negative feedback for my first big reveal!

I love reveal shops! Even when I can't give them a congratulations certificate, as long as I can tell them, that makes it a lot better. I haven't been "cussed out" yet, though. Maybe that's because there is always something positive I can offer. I had to hand over a certificate last night that told them they'd been shopped but better luck next time. I always make sure I get to the shops during a relatively dead time, just in case. This time, the CSR asked what he did wrong. When I told him why I couldn't award him the congrats certificate, I also gave him some positive feedback, so that he could feel good about himself anyway. I had to ask for his manager, and made sure that I gave him positive feedback about the employee I'd shopped. I hope to always be able to make even bad news have some good news included. If people can feel like winners, I think they'll strive to do even better from then on.

I did a reveal shop for a company and the employee had suggested sell
which is what the company wanted -he was so surpirsed (and so was
the manager as well since I had to ask for him)
and then I gave them the reward certifcate and got their name
(apparently they win a prize or somethiong)
but I had fun doing it..
