Besides the possibility of spending more time with your family, did you do it to help out financially?

The money isn' t really all that great - especially for the time that you spend on some shops. However, I' ve gotten into it because I hope to build up a busines that will occupy my time and provide some extra cash when I retire in a few years!
It' s a challenge to me to see just how much extra dollars I can bring in now on a part time basis. I' d encourage anyone new to shopping to sign up with as many companies as they can (check out Volition' s list of companies and check their Daily Nav Bar every day). And, get your MSPA certificates as soon as you can. You' ll be surprised how many shop offers you get if you dedicate the time to setting yourself up right!

The money isn' t all that much but if you oraganize your time and shops you can do ok. I got strated with shopping on a whim and it just so happed that two days later my husband firm went out of business. So it was then to help out but overall it just for fun but the extra money is nice.

I shop for extra money but, I mostly enjoy eating out and if me and my family can do it for free, that's even better.

Mystery shopping is a serious business but going out and playing a "role" (I am neither a high end shopper or a inter-city shopper but I can act the part) is a game I play very well. I have never been detected.

If I worked for the money I would really be disappointed. Some companies throw nickles around like manhole covers. For $8 or less after you pay for gas the companies ask you to give them 200 questions and narritives that take 3 hours. I pass those shops by.

Since I "retired" and everyone else is working there is no one to play with. This is a hobby. I do not work for charity. I insist on exchanging a value for a value. Since I am a "people watcher" some of the employees being evaluated are so hopeless or clueless they are entertainment. Some shops are professional and some employees really try to give good service.

When there is food involved I insist on satisfaction because often that is the only compensation. Only a mystery shopper would smile if they got cold food and lousy service. They would know I am a mystery shopper if I did not complain but I usually start off my complaint with, "I know you are trying to do your best and I appreciate it but..." it takes the sting out of the whip and makes the server feel better and more willing to help you.  Try adjusting the level of service and quality both ways, by making a scene and making yourself "negativley memorable" or starting off by checking your attitude and telling the server that you appreciate them. Often it is not the server's fault.  The manager who did not train the server or the cook who cooks for the money and not for the joy of cooking. I can taste the difference when the cook enjoys their work is responsible.

Of course there was the sever who dumped food and spilled drinks on me three times and asked, "Is there anything I can do for you?" after each incident. I told the server, after the third incident, "Yes, go away!  I afraid to order hot coffee in a cup. Send me a server that is not as dangerous as you. I said it with a smile but I was serious. By this time the manager had come to the table and the server was replaced.

Who doesn't like free things. NOBODY!  Especially if they are items you would buy normally?  Who doesn't like some cash too!  NOBODY!  Who likes to write long narratives, especially with built in questions to see if you were really there...and paying attention? NOBODY!

Don't get me started! :)
I agree with you - the rates should come UP for Shoppers - but guess who really controls these rates? YOU! SHOPPERS like you and I.
I always find myself in the position of bidding for jobs with a set fee for the shoppers. The client usually could care less how much the shoppers are getting paid. They just want to know the bottom line price for getting the job done. They usually do not stop to think that there is a quality issue based on the type of shopper you can acquire for the price.
It is all too often that the client comes back to me saying "John, we would love to use you but we are getting quoted $10 less from XYZ".
After figuring out all costs and a very modest profit I am able to ascertain they are paying the shopper less than half of what I had in mind. Then a few weeks later, I see the shops posted all over town for the shopper pay I had feared. The worst part is, shoppers are taking the shops.
So, to all shoppers. If the pay is seemingly very unfair, please do not accept the shop. The companies will get the idea eventually.
Just my two cents.
